Q. I am not sure how much the living expenses the financial supporters should pay. Would you let me know the average?
A. The amount of the living expenses will be filled out on the application form submitted to the Immigration office and will be checked in two main points.
1. Whether the amount is enough to live.
2. Whether the financial supporter(s) can pay the amount without difficulty, based on his/her annual income and other circumstances.
1. What amount will be sufficient to live in Japan?
According to the "Survey of Students' Living Conditions" conducted by the National Federation of University Co-operative Associations in 2021, the average monthly cost of living for university students living alone is 125,540 yen, which includes 54,000 yen in rent and 14,300 yen in savings and advances.
Rent varies depending on the area where you live and whether or not there are inexpensive student dormitories available.
When savings and rent are deducted, the cost of living is 56,740 yen. To calculate the actual living expenses in your case, please add the necessary rent to this amount.
There is no particular rule for the amount of living expenses to be entered in the application form of Immigration office, but many Japanese language schools in Tokyo area set the minimum amount at 80,000 yen.
