✅ How to Extend Your Period of Stay

What is an application for permission to extend the period of stay? This application is necessary for those who wish to continue activities in Japan under the "Student" residence status.

When can you start to apply? You may begin the application process three months before your current period of stay expires. It usually takes one to two months to receive a new residence card after application submission, so it is advisable to apply well in advance.

Five steps to complete your application:

1. Receive a Request from School:

   • You will receive an email from the school with a request to complete the application process. Click on "Accept the Invitation" to proceed to the input screen.

2. Fill in Required Information:

   • Complete all necessary fields and upload your certificate files in the SpeedVisa system.

3. Submit Information to the School:

   • Once all sections are completed and the check marks turn green, tap the "Submit" button to forward your information to the school.

4. Application Submission to Immigration Office:

   • If Applying Yourself:
     • After collecting the documents from the school, submit them to your local Immigration Office.
     • After the school verifies your details, they will provide a download link. Print out the documents and submit them to the immigration office along with other required items, which generally include:
       • Application for Extension of Period of Stay (complete all sections relevant to you and your institution)
       • Recent 3x4 cm photo (taken within the last three months)
       • Your current resident card
       • Passport
       • Certificate of student status
       • Transcript
     • Confirm with your school which immigration office to visit and which documents are needed.
   • If the School is Applying on Your Behalf:
     • The school will handle the application. Follow any instructions given by your school representative.

5. Receive the Result of the Application:

   • If Applying Yourself:
     • You will receive a notification postcard from the Immigration Office at your registered address. Follow the postcard instructions to retrieve your results from the Immigration Office.
   • If the School Applies on Your Behalf:
     • The school will receive the results and inform you accordingly.
